Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lakey, MD, issued an advisory yesterday urging Texans to protect themselves and their loved ones from pertussis (whooping cough) by getting vaccinated. An increase in cases this year claimed the lives of six children — two of whom were infants — and sickened more than 1,000. That’s the highest number of pertussis victims since 2005.
